GST Calculator: Calculate Goods and Services Tax Instantly

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) has been the cornerstone of India's indirect tax system since July 1, 2017, replacing a complicated structure of multiple central and state taxes. Whether you are a business owner preparing invoices, a consumer verifying your bill, or an accountant reconciling accounts, knowing how to quickly calculate GST on any amount is an essential daily skill. Our free GST Calculator handles both adding GST to a base price and removing GST from a GST-inclusive amount.

What Is GST?

GST is a destination-based, multi-stage tax levied on the supply of goods and services in India. It replaced taxes like VAT, Service Tax, Central Excise Duty, and several others. GST is collected at every stage of the supply chain, but businesses can claim Input Tax Credit (ITC) for the GST they paid on inputs, ensuring that the tax is effectively paid only on the value added at each stage. The final consumer bears the full GST burden.

GST Rate Slabs in India

India uses a multi-slab GST structure. As of the current framework:

  • 0%: Essential items — fresh fruits and vegetables, milk, eggs, bread, salt, books, educational services, healthcare services.
  • 5%: Basic necessities — packaged food items, economy hotel rooms, transport services, some medicines.
  • 12%: Standard goods — butter, cheese, frozen meat, mobile phones, computers.
  • 18%: Most goods and services — restaurants (with AC), financial services, telecom, IT services, capital goods, most manufactured items.
  • 28%: Luxury and sin goods — automobiles, cigarettes, aerated drinks, luxury hotels, casinos.

Rates are periodically revised by the GST Council. Always verify the current rate applicable to your specific product or service category on the official GST portal.

How to Calculate GST

Adding GST to a base price (exclusive GST)

GST Amount = (Base Price Ɨ GST Rate) Ć· 100

Total Price = Base Price + GST Amount

Example: Product price = ₹1,000, GST Rate = 18%

GST Amount = (1,000 Ɨ 18) Ć· 100 = ₹180

Total Price = ₹1,000 + ₹180 = ₹1,180

Removing GST from an inclusive price (reverse GST)

Base Price = Inclusive Price Ć· (1 + GST Rate Ć· 100)

GST Amount = Inclusive Price āˆ’ Base Price

Example: Bill amount = ₹1,180 (inclusive of 18% GST)

Base Price = 1,180 Ć· 1.18 = ₹1,000

GST Component = ₹1,180 āˆ’ ₹1,000 = ₹180

CGST, SGST, and IGST

GST in India is split into components depending on the nature of the transaction:

Intra-state supply (buyer and seller in the same state): Tax is split equally between Central GST (CGST) and State GST (SGST). For an 18% GST transaction, CGST = 9% and SGST = 9%.

Inter-state supply (buyer and seller in different states): Integrated GST (IGST) applies at the full rate. For an 18% transaction, IGST = 18%.

Our calculator shows both CGST/SGST and IGST breakdowns for your reference.

Composition Scheme

Small businesses with annual turnover below ₹1.5 crore (₹75 lakh for some categories) can opt for the GST Composition Scheme, paying a lower flat tax rate (1–6% depending on category) and not collecting GST from customers. However, they cannot claim ITC. If you are a composition dealer, our standard GST calculator does not apply to your billing — use the composition levy rates instead.
